Present your insurance card to the receptionist so she can make a copy and verify coverage.
EXAMSAlthough every eye exam is tailored to the individual complaints or signs of your child, every new patient eye exam will include an assessment of your child's vision in each eye, evaluation of the ability of the eyes to function together including their motility and alignment, examination of the anatomic structures of the eye, and an evaluation of the need for glasses to correct vision.
To achieve these differing objectives, your child will be asked to read letters, numbers, pictures, or simply follow toys or other interesting objects depending on his or her age and function. All of the tests are designed for children and are presented in a child-friendly manner. During the exam, it may be necessary to dilate your child's eyes. This consists of placing two drops in each eye and waiting 25-40 minutes for the pupil to respond and dilate. Once dilation is achieved, the retina can be thoroughly evaluated. In addition, the need for glasses can be determined. Light is projected into your child's dilated pupil and analyzed as it is reflected back to the physician. With limited to no cooperation, the need for glasses can be determined in this fashion.
The entire eye exam may take from one to one and one-half hours. Children's eyes remain dilated for 3 to 6 hours following the exam, which results in blurred near vision. The best way to prepare a child is to be supportive during the exam, reassuring the child by your confidence.

Many of these plans require that a co-pay or co-insurance be paid by the patient and that a referral be obtained from the primary care doctor prior to the appointment.
If you are not familiar with the requirements of your plan, you can call the number for Member Services listed on the back of your card. We cannot honor appointments without the required authorizations in place.
